Philip B. Bean and Gary A. Shafir

Mr. Bean graduated with honors from the California Polytechnic State University in 1980, and earned an additional master’s in Architecture Degree from the University of Oregon in 1987, where he undertook special studies in sacred and Biblical Architecture and Synagogue design.

His dissertation for Master's of Architecture Degree at the University of Oregon, "The Temple of the Temple Scroll", was an in depth study of the architecture and archaeology of all the Jewish Temples, both built and envisioned, culminating in a theoretical reconstruction of the Temple design found in the last of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Copies of the thesis can be found at the Library of Congress; Jerusalem University College; the Rockefeller Museum, Jerusalem; and Prof. Magen Brashi, former Director of the Shrine of the Book (Dead Sea Scrolls) Museum at the Israel National Museum requested and instated copies of the book into the Library of the Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem.

His unique graduate thesis has led him to participation in several archaeological excavations and archaeological based projects. He regularly teaches on the architecture and ministry of the Tabernacle and the Temple.

He has over 25 years of professional design experience in both the US and Israel, specializing in design & master planning of congregational facilities & conference centers. He worked for 5 years in the Seattle area for J. Patrick Mitchell & Assoc., designing churches and conference centers around the Pacific Northwest before moving to Israel to work on numerous congregational projects in his own practice. He is licensed in both Israel and the State of California.
